Focusing on Foundations of Art
Do you want to prepare your child for auditioning to OCSA or another art program or conservatory?
Do you or your child want to become a professional artist or animator someday? Well, you must start somewhere and many schools have eliminated the basic elements of art from their curriculum. As a former artist at Walt Disney Studios working on a number of animated feature films, I am here to prepare you for your journey into becoming a professional artist.
I have found that students are just not prepared for college or a career in art without learning the fundamentals first. Many schools and universities have eliminated the basic foundations of art and many students are lacking the skills needed to major in art or pursue a career in art. This class is for the very beginner or someone who would like to learn a more structured system to significantly improve their drawings. Ages 10 and up. We will be doing exercises to focus on the Foundations of Art. These fundamentals are extremely important in order to have success in your drawings and paintings.
Over the first 4 week session, we will explore the first two Foundations of Art. Line and Shape. This includes doing drawing exercises to help your brain learn to draw what you see. This program is divided into 4-week sessions continuing on to the other Elements of Art for those who have a goal of learning to draw. Please see videos below for an overview of previous students who have taken my drawing/painting courses and what we will be learning in class.
This is an in-person class. This class size is limited as to allow for time for individual feedback in class. Classes will be conducted via Zoom. Please prepare by getting a phone or iPad holder and suggested supplies before classes begin.
Materials for the class can be purchased on my supplies page. Just click the buttons below.
No pre-requisite required. This is the first course in a series of ongoing classes on learning the fundamentals of drawing.
An email will be sent out to students with class rules and zoom link for those who sign up for the class.

Like so many people lately, getting back in touch with your creativity and connecting with the community has been something you have missed throughout this pandemic. Many have suffered from isolation, loneliness or have experienced some sort of loss during this extensive lockdown. Whether it be the death of a loved one, a job, or losing that overall sense of purpose.
Scientific evidence has proven that art, music and connecting with others can be extremely healing on both the body and mind. Mandala painting has been a beautiful and colorful art form for thousands of years. Mandalas have been shown in clinical studies to boost the immune system, reduce stress and pain, lower blood pressure, promote sleep and ease depression.
Sonserae Leese is the Executive Director of Sophie’s Dream, a non-profit to help people heal from trauma and PTSD through the Arts. She has also spent over 25 years in the film industry working as an artist on animated films for Walt Disney Studios, Sony, and Nickelodeon. As a person who herself healed from trauma, she not only enjoys teaching the skills of drawing and painting but also is happy to share helpful suggestions on how to avoid getting depressed, feeling stuck, and learning to make positive goals that will be inspiring.
Prices include all the supplies to paint colorful mandala stones…from dot tools, to brushes, patterns, paint, and rocks. You can continue your love of rock painting after class as you can take the supplies home with you.
Location: Key Courtyard (outdoors)
Ticketed Event: Member $45 | General $55 | Space is limited and advanced reservations are required by Tuesday, July 13 at noon. Suggested for ages 10 and up.
TICKETS: Online or onsite. Questions? E-mail [email protected] or call 714.567.3677. Proceeds benefit Bowers Museum Education Programs. Tickets are non-refundable.
