Learn to Draw - For People 50+
Discover the Joy of Drawing — It’s Never Too Late to Learn
Have you always wanted to learn how to draw, but life got busy?
Maybe you once took a “beginner” class that felt overwhelming—or perhaps you’ve recently discovered a love for nature, birdwatching, travel, or journaling and wish you could capture what you see on paper.
This class was created especially for adults 50 and over who want a supportive, enjoyable, and truly beginner-friendly experience.
No prior art experience is needed. Just curiosity and the desire to learn.
What Are the Foundations of Art?
The Foundations of Art are the essential building blocks that all great drawing and painting are built upon. Unfortunately, many people were never taught these fundamentals—or were taught them in a confusing way.
Over nearly a decade of teaching, I developed a clear, step-by-step curriculum based on how the brain actually learns best: through habit, repetition, and gradual skill-building. This method removes intimidation and replaces it with confidence.
In this class, we will explore the Foundations of Art in an easy-to-follow progression:
- Line – Learning how to control your pencil, build confidence, and create intentional marks
- Shape – Understanding how everything you draw begins with simple shapes
- Form – Turning flat shapes into believable, three-dimensional objects
- Space – Learning how objects relate to each other and sit in space
- Value – Using light and shadow to create depth and realism
- Texture – Suggesting surfaces like feathers, leaves, bark, or fabric
- Color – Understanding how color works (introduced gently and clearly)
Each concept is introduced slowly and reinforced through practical, enjoyable exercises.
What You’ll Gain
- Learn how to draw accurately with scale and proportion
- Train your eyes to truly see, not just guess
- Improve focus, patience, and observation skills
- Strengthen memory and cognitive engagement through creative practice
- Build confidence as you watch your drawings improve week by week
Most importantly, you’ll discover that drawing is not about talent—it’s a learnable skill, and you can absolutely learn it at any age.
A Supportive, Encouraging Environment
This is not a fast-paced or competitive class. It’s a relaxed, welcoming space where questions are encouraged, progress is celebrated, and learning is enjoyable.
Hundreds of students of all ages—many starting later in life—have experienced remarkable growth using this method. Seeing their own improvement has been deeply rewarding and empowering.
Now it’s your turn.
